Hey, this is a pretty cool site. I see it's changed over the years. Keep up the good work Matt. But gee, why on EARTH do you see yourself, your rational analysis of your inner contradictions, as you do? I'm a conservative atheist libertarian hyphenated free thinker, but it's a cohesive, rational viewpoint. Not a contradiction. If I may presume to say so, you've reached your viewpoint by rational self introspection as well, therefore, can the talk of "inner contradictions" -- makes ya sound lefty! Haha, just kidding.

Webmaster's Response:
If and when I make any reference to or suggestion of my "inner contradictions," I am attempting to take the perspective of an external observer who suffers from the misconception that certain views are mutually exclusive in and of themselves, thus are "inner contradictions" if held in tandem; e.g., conservative atheist.

Though I've long since accepted the fact that "concerned," read pushy, Christians view an atheist's posting of a web site as a desperate plea for salvation and proselytize accordingly, what does this really have to do with my web site? I've finally found someone like me! When asked my religious affiliation, I reply that I'm atheist. People assume that I'm really liberal because of it. But I'm actually, a Republican, which often gets surprised reactions. It's always hard to explain why I strayed religiously from and stuck to politically what my parents taught me. It's good to know what I'm not the only conservative atheist. Enjoyed the site! I'll be back for sure! ^_~

Hi. I loved your website. It was like reading a story of my childhood almost. I don't believe in a Christian "God" anymore. I believe in a higher form of power.....you can call it a "god" if you want to....you can call it Harry Potter for all I care. But I think of it more along the lines of Mother Nature. A superior force of the cosmos. You know....the thing that makes tornadoes and hurricanes and snow and storms and such. But certainly no deity that would even remotely concern itself with humans on microscopic particle of the universe such as the earth.....much less their salvation. Religion is a man made concept. It's an ancient means of social control. Always has been....always will be. Don't get me wrong.....if someone wants to believe in a myth and it helps them deal with stuff and they find peace in it then they should continue to do so.....as long as they don't use it to control or harm others. Religion has been an automobile for more destruction and terrorism than any other factor since the beginning of time......The spanish inquisition, burning of "witches", Hitler....(and yes....Hitler was a devout catholic and often preached and believed he was finishing what god started by killing the jews), to abortion clinic bombers, from Bin Ladin to Jerry Falwell. All terrorist in their own "rites" to do what they do in the name of religion. You see more conflict and more "wars" among the "holier than thou".....the methodists bashing the Baptist.....the Baptist bashing the Methodist....both bashing the Catholics.......how many atheists do you see bashing each other? Christians fighting Muslims....Muslims fighting Christians......when they both originated from the same "god".......Ironic isn't it? Looks like Cain and Able aren't finished killing each other yet. I live in a part of the states where Evolution has been changed to a four-letter word EVILution. Try carrying on an intelligent and mature conversation about evolution and creation with a devout member of the Flat-Earth Society. The ruling mentality is "I don't know the answer so God musta dunnit". Actually......your website was quite refreshing. Keep up the good work and look forward to your next entries. Peace to all.

I often wonder if I am alone as a "conservative atheist." I typed "conservative atheist" into Google. What a great site you have!

I'm a white male, age 39. I was churched mostly as an Episcopalian ("Whiskey-palian" to my foot-washin' Primitive Baptist great Granny), which in some quarters is dang near atheism. So I was never really immersed in hard-core Christianity.

I have an uncle who was a budding Pentecostal preacher back in the '70s. He would regale me with stories of "going to hell" if one didn't accept Jesus. I was about 10 at the time. I remember asking him questions something like:

"Even if a murderer of lots of people repents only moments from dying, he will go to heaven?" (Yes)
"A person who does good deeds all his life yet never becomes born-again goes to hell?" (Yes)
"A child born in another country of another religion and never even knows Christianity exists goes to hell?" (Yes)

I was bewildered - and scared. I didn't want to go to hell. I made myself pray every night to keep from going to hell. One night I tried to go through the process of becoming "born again." But there was something missing. No matter how fervently I tried, I never was filled with joy or the spirit or the ecstatic feeling that I'd heard about. I mean, isn't there supposed to be some sort of significant sign from Jesus? I got nuthin'! I figured that I'd prayed so hard, even cried, that surely I had been born again. Maybe I just didn't recognize the sign.

I muddled through my teenage years as a "believer," about like most Christians. Hell, isn't that what we're supposed to be? Actually, I never gave it much serious thought (at least not as reverently as beer and pussy), but if asked, yes, I believed. I do remember having nagging doubts sometimes.

Well, I got a college degree, got married, and now have two young sons. I fully accepted my disbelief about 10-12 years ago. It wasn't a thunderstruck event; it was more of a long climb to the top of the mountain. Once I was there, I knew it, and it felt liberating. It felt good and right. Peaceful.

I hardly ever reveal my dis-beliefs to anyone. I'm not as ready, energy-wise, to defend myself. It would be exhausting, and so many friends and acquaintances would not understand. I'm sure some suspect it from the way I talk and joke irreverently at times.

My wife was raised in big ol' Southern Baptist churches, youth groups and all. We don't discuss religion much, but she knows and understands my position. She still believes and attends church sporadically, but she has her doubts. I think her many years of Baptist indoctrination prevents her from going over to the dark side. My young sons go with her to church. When they are older, I'll explain myself to them. It's weird; it's easier for me to talk about sex with my 9-year old than about God n' stuff.

As for being Conservative, hell, that goes without explanation. As for being pro-life, that came with having kids. It's a travesty for abortion to be used as birth control. A fetus should not be an inconvenience.

Now, about my Pentecostal uncle. He is 50-years old, and he still preaches... in a gay Pentecostal church! He came out two years ago after two wives and two kids. He has a partner, and he is finally happy. Good for him. I respect him for accepting himself for what he is.

I cannot help it. I cannot overcome it, and I don't want to. I AM A CONSERVATIVE ATHEIST.

Why do you consider yourself as one of the "few" right wing athiests? Godlessness comes in all flavors, and there are those that consider Jesus to be one of the first Socialists. Go figure...

Webmaster's Response:
I claim to be "one of the few conservative, Republican, traditionalist, Secular Humanist atheists in existence" because I obviously am! When I started on the Internet in late 1996, my keyword searches for "Republican atheist" or "conservative atheist" yielded mostly anti-Republican, anticonservative atheists. Since posting this web site in early 1997, an encouraging number of atheist right-wingers have visited and signed this guestbook.
