Hi Matt! Glad to see I'm not the only conservative atheist on the planet! Reading through your site was like reading from pages of my own life... Scottish, conservative, atheist, solider, etc. We have much in common. As soon as I'm finished with my Masters Degree, I plan on starting my own website/blog. I hope I can pick your brain for knowledge on setting it up. Best wishes, Freddie B.

I hate to break it to you, but Garry Trudeau rocks. you don't have to like him, but he is no hack.

Webmaster's Response:
I was long a Doonesbury fan and often turned to the editorial pages immediately just to read it first. While it is highly unlikely for a Pulitzer Prize winner to be a "hack cartoonist," nothing precludes a highly-skilled, accomplished cartoonist also being a "political hack." In "Doonesbury, hate radio and hate cartoons," published 30 December 1997 in my local paper, I justifiably labeled Garry Trudeau "a mean-spirited hack for the Clinton administration." I hate to break it to you, but Garry Trudeau hasn't rocked since he found it impossible to control his shrill leftist politics.

First and foremost, I have saved a copy of my unaltered statement in my files, and I will be checking back to see if there has been any unwarranted editing. I understand your right to edit as you see fit, but my post will not contain any profanity or offensive content, so I would appreciate it if my message went through as intended.

This statement will probably cause your vision to become colored, but as the guidelines in "Mastering Public Speaking" suggest for ethical listening (taken here as reading), please read objectively. I am a proponent of animal welfare, though I am not vegan or anything of the like. I would like you to know that although these flyers and protests rarely cause any change, their message is worthwhile. I choose to eat meat only from certain sources, because the fact is that the larger meat corporations do treat their animals in a horrific fashion. I understand your opposition to vegetarianism, since this does seem "unnatural" and "hippy-ish" to an extreme. I would normally agree with you. However, from what I have read (and I do choose to research this quite a bit on my own time, from both sides) and from what I have seen from routine inspections, these meat production plants within regulation are below marginal, at best. The treatment of circus animals is in fact a gross exploitation of animals for none other than entertainment purposes. This elephant story is tragic, but I did understand the need to subdue the animal. Yet, what I'm asking you to look into is how this animal was treated prior to its dramatic escape. The training methods are incredibly brutal. Please look into how animals are trained, and the atrocities that occur in slaughterhouses. I think you will be surprised. What I call for is reform of the conditions of the slaughter animals, because right now, they are subpar.

Webmaster's Response:
"Susie Q" found my old column on a Google search on "circus "animal rights"" in which the following was result #10 of about 240,000:

Circus accusations show animal rights irrationality
Opinion column reacting to animal rights wackos on campus at UNC-Greensboro and elsewhere.
www.compleatheretic.com/pubs/columns/nocircus.html - 26k - Cached - Similar pages
And contrary to "her" claim "to research this quite a bit on my own time, from both sides," "she" took all of 32 seconds to read my column and the supporting information before commenting on it:
15:26:46 EDT   Circus accusations show animal rights irrationality
15:27:18 EDT   Contact Page
15:27:50 EDT   Guestbook Central
15:28:28 EDT   Guestbook Form
No doubt "her" "research" methods in general are just as "thorough." So much for "ethical listening (taken here as reading)"!

Paranoia really lends credence to the animal rights wacko position, doesn't it. I not only posted this entry word for word, but I also maintained the paragraphs as submitted. My treatment of this entry is more than generous given that it is one step removed from being SPAM, lacking only the gratuitous dropping of a URL. Anyway, why would I alter a statement which only proves the point I was, and am, making in my 1992 column, "Circus accusations show animal rights irrationality."

I'm shocked, shocked to find that food animals are being killed in slaughterhouses!

Hmm, animal rights wackos are such kind and gentle souls. But then again, perhaps "tam d" was unduly influenced by reading my old column, "Circus accusations show animal rights irrationality," published 13 February 1992 in The Carolinian at The University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Went over real well then too!
